Energy Transfer Expansion Project

ABC Pelican Excellence in Construction Award
Auger Cast Piles, Sheet Piles

Project Overview

GROUP Contractors successfully executed the Energy Transfer Partners Flexport Project in Nederland, Texas, despite facing numerous challenges. The project involved installing 3,682 precast piles, 115 linear feet of sheet piles, and 100 limited-access Auger Cast-in-Place (ACIP) piles under an aggressive commissioning timeline. Precision scheduling, proactive planning, and meticulous documentation were critical to the project’s success.

As a subcontractor to S&B Engineers and Constructors, GROUP tackled the demanding pile-driving phase first. Limited laydown space required just-in-time deliveries from Texas Concrete Prestress, located four hours away. Engineering delays and incomplete drawings necessitated frequent re-sequencing to maintain progress. GROUP adapted by performing three- to four-week lookaheads to address potential issues and adjusted schedules to prioritize areas with completed designs.

Months into construction, the project scope expanded to include ACIP piles, with the completion date remaining unchanged. Navigating tight spaces and threading piles between existing pipelines presented significant challenges, but Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and meticulous surveying ensured precise placement. Frequent rain and flooding further complicated progress, requiring de-watering efforts and rescheduling work.

Despite these obstacles, GROUP maintained a steadfast commitment to quality and safety. The team leveraged Procore for information management, Primavera P6 for scheduling, and Excel for procurement tracking. Spotters and client representatives oversaw each installation phase to ensure compliance and avoid damage.

Through rigorous planning, constant communication, and dedication, the project was completed on time in April 2024, with zero OSHA recordables and 33,618 manhours worked without incident. This accomplishment highlights GROUP’s expertise and adaptability in delivering complex industrial projects.
